Curtis A. Pettaway, MD

Dr. Pettaway is Professor of Urology and Cancer Biology at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. DR Pettaway recieved his medical degree from Temple University with honors  and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. His post graduate training in urology was completed at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center  with a  subsequent Urologic Oncology Fellowship at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Pettaway’s clinical and basic science research is centered on prostate and penile cancers with an emphasis on high risk localized disease. The goal of his prostate cancer related  studies is to 1) Further define host and molecular markers of prostate cancer progression, 2) develop novel therapeutic strategies to cure locally advanced disease and 3) to reduce disparities in prostate cancer outcome among African Americans and the underserved.

With respect to penile cancer his specific research themes are to  decrease both the morbidity and the mortality of the disease by: 1)  Defining prognostic markers for metastatic disease 2) Developing sensitive staging procedures that decrease the morbidity of standard lymphadenectomy  and 3) Combining therapeutic strategies in an attempt to cure patients with advanced penile cancer.

Diplomate of the American Board of Urology and an applicant to be a Fellow of the American College of Surgery, Dr. Alphonse has been involved in many Men’s health initiatives including the CHAMPS Men’s Health Fair, numerous “prostate screenings” at local hospital, churches and clinics.

Dr. Alphonse has also written articles on Erectile Dysfunction for the “The Atlanta Voice” and been a recurrent featured guest on “ The Michael Baisden Show”, a nationally syndicated radio talk show. Dr. Alphonse was recognized by the Atlanta Medical Association as the “2006 Young Physician of the Year”.
